Our extended family recently started getting into Charcuterie boards.
On my side of the family, we have 5 adults and 3 kids, which isn’t a large enough group for huge dinners sometimes. We started doing Charcuterie boards on Christmas when we only had a few hours to stop at my mom’s house between other family visits.
We decided to do a charcuterie board as a snack between events to just spend a little time with each other without needing another full meal on Christmas day.
We instantly fell in love with the idea but all 3 children, who are normally pretty picky eaters, loved being able to grab what they want when they wanted.
Ever since we’ve thrown together a charcuterie board almost every time we get together.
We try to make these boards simple enough for the kids, while still exciting for the adults.
Here are some tips that we’ve learned as well as some ideas to inspire your own board!
Where To Shop For Charcuterie Board Items
Your Pantry: I’m a big fan of starting with what we have and building off that. Have a can of olives? Crackers? Grapes? Use those up first and add whatever is needed later.
Costco: Costco has a variety of yummy items you can add to charcuterie boards, especially mixes of meats, cheese, and crackers that give you more variety. Going here is great when you need a larger quantity to feed a large group, but not so great if you’re only serving a few people.
Trader Joe’s: This is my personal go-to. Trader Joe’s has a variety of packs of meats, fancy cheeses, yummy spreads, and unique treats that you don’t find just anywhere.
Walmart: If you’re looking for a pretty basic and cheap kid-friendly charcuterie board you can’t go wrong with Walmart. They’ve started adding sections in the deli area for charcuterie boards where you can get packs and assorted cheese and meats to jazz up your board.
What To Put On A Kid-Friendly Charcuterie Board
When it comes to building a kid-friendly charcuterie board you have a few key aspects to start with; meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, and crackers.
Depending on your groups’ tastes and size you can select multiple from each category. I suggest picking at least one from each category and going from there.
Remember, the larger the variety you include the less of each item you need. Sometimes if I can only buy a larger package of one item and I don’t intend to use it later I will make that the primary focus of the board.
